The Secret Place

Yesterday, my sister said something that completely changed the way I looked at my walk with God.

She said:

“What you do in the secret place should be the same in the open.”

If you worship in the secret place, your worship in public should look the same.

If you pray in the secret place, your prayers in public should simply be an overflow of what already exists behind closed doors.

I had heard this idea before, but this time it landed differently.

It made me realise that the secret place isn’t just where we meet with God, it’s where our true character is formed.

What Happens in Secret Eventually Shows Up

The more I thought about it, the more I realised this principle applies to every area of life.

If we secretly feed negative thoughts, eventually they show up in our words.

If we secretly live in fear, eventually it affects our decisions.

If we secretly carry unforgiveness, eventually it spills into our relationships.

What happens in private never truly stays private. It always produces fruit somewhere.

Jesus said:

“For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
— Matthew 12:34

An Overflow, Not a Performance

Sometimes we can fall into the trap of treating our relationship with God like an event rather than a lifestyle.

We show up on Sunday.

We attend the prayer meeting.

We raise our hands during worship.

But what did the rest of the week look like?

Did we spend time with Him when nobody was watching?

Did we worship when there was no music?

Did we pray when there was no microphone?

Did we seek Him when there was no audience?

Public worship should never be a performance. It should be an overflow.

Jesus taught:

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.”
— Matthew 6:6

The secret place was never meant to be optional. It is where intimacy with God is built.

God Sees What Others Cannot

One of the most comforting things about the secret place is that God sees it all.

The prayers nobody hears.

The tears nobody notices.

The worship nobody applauds.

The obedience nobody celebrates.

While the world often rewards what is visible, God values what is hidden.

“Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
— Matthew 6:6

Nothing done for God is ever wasted.

A Life of Worship

I believe God is calling many of us back to consistency.

Not perfection.

Consistency.

A life where our public faith matches our private devotion.

A life where prayer is not something we do occasionally but something we live with daily.

A life where worship isn’t limited to Sunday mornings but becomes part of how we live, think, speak, and love.

Because when we spend time with Jesus in the secret place, eventually it becomes impossible not to carry Him into every other place.

The truth is, what happens in secret will always be revealed.

So the question is:

What are you cultivating when nobody is watching?
