Before Esther, There Was Vashti

When we think of the book of Esther, our minds naturally gravitate toward Esther’s bravery and her critical role in saving the Jewish people. But before Esther stepped onto the stage, another queen made a profound statement that set the foundation for everything to follow—Queen Vashti.

Often, Vashti’s story is told in a negative light, portraying her as defiant and rebellious. Yet, a closer look reveals a woman of remarkable courage and integrity. Her bold refusal to bow to societal expectations cost her everything, yet it left a legacy that inspires us today to walk in our God-given identity with boldness and conviction.

Vashti was hosting a banquet for the noblewomen of the kingdom when her husband, King Ahasuerus, called her to parade her beauty before his drunken guests. Some scholars believe this meant she was asked to wear only her crown—a request that was degrading and humiliating. Vashti refused, and her decision wasn’t just an act of personal defiance. It carried far-reaching influence, especially on the women who were watching her.

Her courage to say no sent a powerful message: You don’t have to compromise your dignity to meet the demands of others.

What about us?
Where has God placed you to be an influence? You don’t need a large platform; influence starts with everyday decisions to honor God and live with integrity.

Scripture Focus:
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)

  1. Vashti stood her ground in integrity. She chose dignity over approval, truth over comfort, and obedience to conscience over the applause of the crowd. Her moment of courage reminds us that influence isn’t always loud or celebrated, it often begins with the simple, steady choice to honor God when no one else seems to be watching. And like Vashti, we may never fully see how our decisions to uphold righteousness impact those around us, but heaven sees it, and God uses it. Wherever He has placed you, your steadfastness may be the very spark that encourages another soul to stand faithful, too.
