Have you ever waited to be chosen?
To be picked.
To be included.
To be seen.
I have.
But it wasn’t for football or sports.
It was for something simple… a presentation.
I remember sitting there, fully expecting that the people I spoke to every day, the ones I laughed with, would pick me to be on their team.
But they didn’t.
Not only did they not choose me…
they didn’t even hesitate.
No eye contact.
No second thought.
Nothing.
And in that moment, something shifted in me.
“I’ll Just Do It Myself”
Instead of asking to join them, I made a quiet decision:
I’ll just work on my own.
Not because I wanted to.
But because I didn’t want to feel that rejection again.
At the time, it felt like strength.
Independence.
Confidence.
Self-sufficiency.
“I don’t need anyone.”
But if I’m honest… it wasn’t strength.
It was protection.
When Rejection Becomes Your Mindset
That one moment stayed with me longer than I realised.
It became the silent force behind how I moved in life.
If I’m going to do something, I’ll do it myself.
I won’t wait to be picked.
I won’t give anyone the chance to reject me again.
And while that mindset can look strong on the outside…
Inside, it’s rooted in something deeper:
The fear of not being chosen.
The Lie We Start to Believe
Rejection has a way of rewriting our identity if we’re not careful.
It whispers:
You’re not wanted.
You’re not valuable.
You’re not chosen.
So we adapt.
We become independent, not from wholeness, but from hurt.
We avoid vulnerability.
We stop putting ourselves in spaces where we could be overlooked.
Not because we don’t desire connection…
But because we’re trying to protect ourselves from pain.
But God Doesn’t Choose Like People Do
Here’s what I’ve come to realise:
People choose based on preference.
God chooses based on purpose.
Where people overlook, God sees.
Where people exclude, God calls.
Where people hesitate, God is intentional.
Scripture reminds us:
“You are a chosen people…” — 1 Peter 2:9
Not almost chosen.
Not eventually chosen.
Already chosen.
Chosen Before the Moment of Rejection
What if that moment didn’t define you?
What if, even while you were sitting there waiting to be picked…
God had already chosen you?
Before that classroom.
Before that rejection.
Before that feeling.
You were already seen.
Already known.
Already selected.
Healing the Need to Prove Yourself
I had to unlearn something:
I don’t have to prove my worth by doing everything on my own.
I don’t have to build walls to protect myself from rejection.
Because my value was never in who picked me.
It was always in who chose me.
A New Way to See It
That moment didn’t make me unworthy.
It revealed something that needed healing.
And maybe you’ve had your own version of that moment.
A time where you weren’t chosen.
A time where you felt overlooked.
A time where you quietly told yourself, “I’ll just do it alone.”
But God is gently reminding you:
You were never overlooked by Him.
You Are Still Chosen
Even if they didn’t pick you…
Even if they didn’t see you…
Even if they didn’t recognise your value…
God did.
And He still does.
You are not defined by who didn’t choose you.
You are defined by the One who did.
